Ipopeng Baphalane Clinic better able to serve Mantserre

The Ipopeng Baphalane clinic has been in operation since 1992, but had only two consultation rooms and outdated facilities, so it was not able to provide adequate healthcare to Mantserre community members

Moses Kotane Department of Health (DoH) acting operational manager Abbey Metsileng approached the Dikuno Tša Sechaba Community Development Trust (Dikuno) for help, and renovation plans were discussed between 2021 and 2022.

After positive engagement between Dikuno and the DoH, it was agreed that the clinic would temporarily operate from the Lutheran church in Mantserre so that Dikuno could start upgrading the clinic in August 2022.

Dikuno has renovated the old structure and enhanced the clinic by adding a guard house, an emergency room, a board room, a pharmacy, solar panels, ablution blocks, plumbing upgrades and paving, as well as providing Wi-Fi facilities. The trust has also donated clinic equipment, such as wheelchairs, emergency beds and a stove.

Collaborating with communityfocused trusts, such as Dikuno, increases our impact. There is also an urgent need to empower the youth in sectors such as information and communications technology (ICT), agriculture, and healthcare

Sefikile Bridge

Dikuno officially handed over a double-lane and a single-lane bridge as well as a footbridge to the Sefi kile community on 13 October 2022.

In the rainy season, a stream divides Sefikile and there is a school on both sides of the fast-flowing water. During the dry season, a dilapidated bridge used to be the only way commuters or pedestrians could cross the dry riverbed.

The Sefi kile community reached out to Dikuno, pleading for a sustainable and safe bridge so that community members could get to schools, work, clinics, and shops without endangering their lives in the rainy season. The project kicked off on 27 June 2022 and was completed on 30 September 2022.

We work for the community – it’s not the fi rst time and it won’t be the last.

Harry Monye, Dikuno Tša Sechaba Community Development Trust chairperson

Thank you to Dikuno Tša Sechaba Community Development Trust for these bridges that will greatly benefi tour community.

Sedibelo Secondary School All Brand New

In essence, Sedibelo Secondary School, which serves Moruleng’s Mabodisa section, is a whole new school! Twelve classrooms and a new admin block were officially handed over on 14 October 2022, and the fencing around the school has also been upgraded.

The new buildings came fully equipped. The classrooms contain new desks and white boards. The air-conditioned admin block includes a staffroom, a kitchenette with a microwave and fridge, ablution facilities, a fi ling room, a reception offi ce, a general offi ce, a built-in safe room and sick bays, as well as offi ces for the principal and deputy principal. All the necessary offi ce furniture – desks, tables, chairs, fi ling cupboards and so on – has also been provided.

This came about because Dikuno heeded the call of the school’s former principal, Mekube Matshidiso, who went from pillar to post asking for help because the school had become uninhabitable, with major cracks in the walls and several leaks in the roof. It was so run down that it posed a safety risk to learners and the educators.

The successfully developed ICT Centre that is being launched is to be used to offer accredited ICT skills development programmes.

The first of such programmes, that the Dikuno and Department of Basic Education Partnership is already bringing towards implementation is a computer literacy skills development programme.

We will always be there for our learners, and we will always be willing to share information that will enhance their knowledge.

Kgamanyane Ramokoka, Ambassador of BakgatlaBa-Kgafela
